Mary Julyan
My studio looks out on mountains and backs up to the Sandias. Each day there is a chance to simplify and translate what I see and feel. It is a process, a goal, a challenge, never to be fully achieved but to be approached to the degree my efforts, talents, and circumstances permit. I am aided in this quest by the rich, supportive environment of Albuquerque and New Mexico, where talented artists give freely and share, where workshops, classes, art organizations, galleries, and showing venues abound.
After more than twenty years of working with clay in my Echo Canyon studio, it was time for a change. I had been attending life drawing sessions at the Harwood Art Center when I saw a flier for a plein air retreat in Taos led by Michelle Chrisman. It had been over forty years since I took introductory oil painting classes at The Art Students League in New York City and at University of Wisconsin at Madison, and neither dealt with landscapes, inside or out. Michelle was kind and supportive. She simplified each task and challenged each artist to make quick decisions. Emboldened with eight pathetic panels and excessive enthusiasm, I signed up for the 2006 PANM Placitas Paintout and showed my efforts at the PANM gallery in Bernalillo, NM.
Since then, I have taken advantage of many workshops, demonstrations, openings, meetings, paintouts, and opportunities to exhibit. I am an active member of RGAA and PAPNM and have plein air painted in California, Colorado, Florida, Kentucky, and Wisconsin, as well as throughout New Mexico.
My work may be seen at Elinor Oldham's Fine Art and Bead Gallery in Albuquerque, NM.
